Are you interested in being active, trying a new sport, developing your hockey skills and making friends? Are you aged between 6 and 16? Why not join our Youth Academy?!
Sessions are held each Saturday morning (9am to 10am) in term time at our fantastic astro turf pitch at Winterfold School, Chaddesley Corbett.
The season starts in September so that's an ideal time to start but we welcome new players at any time of the year and they are invited to come and try a session free of charge. We welcome children from the age of six right through to sixteen and we can lend a stick whilst you get started.
Previous experience of playing hockey isn't necessary. We coach individuals of all abilities and anyone who has played a team sport will see how some of the tactics and skills are transferable between all team sports.
All players are required to wear loose fitting sports clothing, specific all weather pitch trainers, a gum shield and shin pads for the sessions. Keeping hydrated whilst training and playing hockey is important, so water or a suitable soft drink will also be required.
In cold weather, players may choose to layer up and wear a hat, gripped gloves and a coat. There are no hard and fast rules but it is important that players can move freely and grip their stick.
Parents/Carers are responsible for ensuring that a suitable fitted gum shield is worn for all training sessions and matches.
Parents/Carers are invited to stay and watch the sessions from outside of the pitch. There is plenty of room to set up a picnic chair should individuals wish to do so.
Parents/Carers are required to complete our registration documents so we have emergency contact details and are aware of any relevant health and behavioural information. We will add your number to our WhatsApp group which we use to keep members updated on training sessions and tournaments.
What is Hockey Coaching?
Our hockey programme begins with an introductory trial for young people who would like to try hockey. The sessions will help to develop their interest in sport, increase their skills and improve their fitness. Our focus is on individual progression, making friends and having fun. And, of course, we provide a safe environment for our young people.
Our young athletes are grouped according to their age, ability and personal preference so that they can enjoy sessions that challenge and develop them whilst retaining our family friendly club ethos. As soon as they would like to, children are invited to represent our club at tournaments playing against teams from other local clubs. As their skills and ability increase further, they have opportunities to trial for county, regional and national level hockey. There is an established pathway which provides an opportunity for all players to enjoy our sport at a level that is right for them.
If they would like to and if they are ready, juniors can transfer to adult hockey from school years nine or ten. At this stage, they will be invited to attend full club training sessions but can continue to do junior coaching as well. The more pitch time you have, the faster you will improve!
Sessions for 2026/2027 will take place:
18th April to 16th May (inclusive)
6th June to 11th July (inclusive)
Training will restart in September 2026. Dates to follow.
Tournaments will be scheduled in addition to these dates. Dates to follow.
As matches come up, we will send you a reminder (generally via Teamo, our game's management app) requesting your child's availability. A week or so before the tournament, you will receive a notification via Teamo confirming your child's selection. Our policy is to include all children. The only criteria for selection is regular attendance at our training sessions. Parents are invited to watch their children play at tournaments and encouraged to support with on the day management.
We warmly welcome new members. Your first session will be free of charge BUT you must register prior so that we have your emergency contact details and relevant health information. Subsequent sessions cost £5 with additional family members paying £3 per session.
